Aftershock

Aubrey Brady

Where were you
when the world quaked,
when the wheels fell off
tottering and lolling to the ground,
bare axle, like brittle bone protruding
through skin thinned by all it had endured?

Aftershocks would soon follow
causing every space to shudder.

But all I can remember is the crisp air,
the light chitter of laughing children,
the greenness of the soft ground,
the breeze that pulled at hair
and twisted it into knots.
The worst an afterthought.
