Marly Youmans

The life in me was as if in a box
Set about with irregular small stones,
And on the lid were lights of many tints
Like clouds of glimmering, or keen and bright;
The variation pleased the soul inside.
The coffer’s sides were carved from ivory
But changed to metalwork in evening hours,
Patinaed in a potent oxide bath,
The surfaces half polished and half matte,
In places passionate with flowerings.
And all the while an undulating stream
Of notes came flowing from the shrouded life,
Its music borrowed from another realm;
The casket’s leaves and blooms, its glints and stars
Were stirring in that alleluia swirl,
Unfolding, spilling forth antiphonal,
Auroral answers to far harmonies.
