Heaven's Rest

Heaven's Rest

Heaven’s Rest

J.M. Bergman

I'm not alone in all this ice
that holds my deepest shame.

If I create space for peace to dwell;
If I love enough to let go
of this world's temporary shell,

and focus instead on sweet dreams
where summer nights chase stars
and dragonflies inside my mind.

Where butterflies carry wishes on innocent skies
and waves caress the shore, carrying away the day
with the soft lullabies of night.

I admit I've held onto ice all my life,
to protect me from the unseen wounds,
But it’s only made my peace come undone.

I release this truth and the icy shame breaks;
Sharp knives of guilt quake, diving into depths unseen.

A tsunami of grace rushes across the surface
headstrong to consume me where I stand,
arms wide on the shore of heaven's rest.
